Toshiba showcases Aquilion ONE's new developments in CT imaging

- Introduction of ‘Whole-organ Body Perfusion’ and ‘Myocardial Perfusion imaging’ at ECR 2010 -

ZOETERMEER, 05 March 2010 - Toshiba Medical Systems Europe is proud to present exciting new developments in functional CT imaging - “Whole-organ Body Perfusion” and “Myocardial Perfusion” – at the European Congress of Radiology held in Vienna, Austria, 5 – 8 March 2010 (booth #316, Expo C).
A clinical evaluation program was initiated in close cooperation with leading European University Hospitals, Berlin (Germany), Copenhagen (Denmark), Edinburgh (Scotland) and Graz (Austria)

Whole-organ Body Perfusion*
The exceptionally wide 16cm organ coverage of Aquilion ONETM provides substantial benefits in volumetric imaging, allowing visualization of an organ without the need to move the patient. In just 1 rotation, superior 3D visualization of an entire organ is now a reality. In addition to this unprecedented coverage, the 4th ‘time’ dimension is now within easy reach by adding, low dose, rotations over time.
Multiple iso-phasic images, with pre-set delay times, provide high quality perfusion data of organs. By setting the ROI in Portal and/or Arterial vessels, valuable functional data and images are obtained, e.g. facilitating follow-up of Liver transplants.
Only the Aquilion ONE provides iso-phasic temporal resolution up to 16 cm in one rotation, unique in today’s CT technology. Combined with highly advanced temporal position matching software, Toshiba’s Whole-organ Body Perfusion application is the portal towards a new era in functional CT diagnostics.

Myocardial Perfusion*
Cardiac imaging in CT, so far, is hampered from quantifying cardiac tissue functionality caused by obstructed coronaries and/or infarcts.
Based on the results of CorE64** (a worldwide Multicenter trial), 75% of all patients would be diagnosed by CT angiography alone. Over 25% of all patients would need some other functional test, usually perfusion. Aquilion ONE can do both CTA and CT Perfusion in one examination.
Only Toshiba’s Aquilion ONE provides, in addition to a standard CT coronary angiography, a real iso-phasic visualization of the entire heart.

In order to visualize the entire heart, other scanners need to move the patient causing undesired, uneven contrast distribution over the heart. The unique 16cm z-coverage of the Aquilion ONE allows scanning of the heart without having to move the patient resulting in homogeneous contrast distribution.

Myocardial Perfusion is interpreted by comparing rest and stress data. The rest scan is usually performed using a low dose, prospective CT angiography protocol. Pending body mass index and heart-rate, sub-mSv protocols may be applied. After administration of a pharmacological stress agent, a low dose stress scan is performed.
The low dose, ease of use of this new application and the advantage to complete a diagnosis in just 1 examination is an economical advantage and valuable contribution in cardiac healthcare.
